Lt. Ehren Watada signed up for the military after 9/11. He enlisted under an eight year contract. In November of 2003 Watada was promoted to a Lieutenant and continued to serve until he was called to Iraq. Prior to this there doesn’t seem to be any public objection on his part to the Iraq war. Watada feels that because he is a Lieutenant and not of lower rank, that he can decide not to go to war.
There are many different reasons why soldiers enlist. Whether it is for money, education, discipline, health care, or a strong love for our Nation and freedom, you still have a duty to serve your term. You would have to be dumb as a rock to think that if you sign up you can avoid going to war, especially after 9/11. Rent Pauli Shores “In the Army now” if you think that the military is a free ride.
Although Ehren claims that he signed up out of a desire to serve the country, I doubt this to be true. First, his father, Robert Watada, refused to serve in the Vietnam War. I am sure that growing up Ehren had anti-war sentiment shoved down his throat by his traitor father. Second, in Ehren public comments he not only attacks the war, but the President as well. Third, why did he continue taking promotions long after the war had started? On all accounts it seems that Ehren is an intelligent human being, was he just not capable of rational thought?
Many argue that Watada’s freedoms are being stepped on. They say that Watada has the right to decided whether or not to fight the war. Also that he is entitled to say whatever he wants in public about the war or his Nation. I disagree. When you sign up for the military you sign up knowing that you have to obey orders. Nobody said you have to like the orders, just obey them. In addition, when you join you become the face of the military; you are under obligation to support the Nation and its causes.
I know that many of you are thinking that this really isn’t that big of a deal. It is just one guy, let him go and forget about it. To that I would say what does this do to the moral of the troops?
Should Lt. Ehren Watada be court-martialed for speaking against the war, his superiors, and his nation? To simply put it, yes. Lt. Ehren Watada is nothing more then a left winged ploy to build on the mentality that the military is a heartless brutal organization. The left is using him to build anti-war and anti-U.S. sentiment.
